Media, Membership, and Marketing Associate

The Museum of Chinese in America is a non-profit institution that engages audiences in an ongoing dialogue, in which people of all backgrounds are able to see U.S. history and society through a critical lens, to reflect on their own experiences, and to make meaningful connections between the past and the present, the global and the local, themselves and others. Through its exhibitions, collections, and programs, MOCA invites people of all backgrounds to explore the diversity and complexity of U.S. history and culture, while gaining unique access to the images, papers, oral histories, and artifacts which document the story.

 

The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) seeks an energetic, detail-oriented Media, Membership, and Marketing Associate to join its external affairs team. This person will be an important part of the MOCA team, managing data and relationships with media and membership. This individual will also design and execute on MOCA’s marketing needs, including the design of signage, materials, and publicity materials. S/he will identify and capitalize on opportunities to grow MOCA’s media presence, membership, and overall institutional marketing efforts. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, who will create and implement a plan to increase membership recruitment and engagement. The individual will work closely with the President and other members of the marketing, development, and special events team.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Work closely with the President to manage the membership and annual fund department’s fundraising and budget, including revenue goal setting and review of both expenses and income, to achieve fundraising targets and membership growth goals.
  • Establish overall strategy and the annual calendar of membership events and programs, in collaboration with MOCA colleagues.
  • Develop and administer processes, systems and timeline for maintaining all membership and annual fund appeal solicitation mailings and email communications, including acquisitions, renewals, upgrades, invitations, and general communications.
  • Manage memberships in MOCA’s database, including input of data/records, gifts processing, list pulls and creation of reports, and staff training, etc. Manage membership gifts process, in coordination with Visitor Services and Operations team.
  • Draft all membership materials; such as, thank you letters, renewals, web content, emails, e-blasts, appeals and special marketing materials, as needed.
  • Promote and increase membership on site at the Museum, as well as through community outreach and special events (e.g., Members’ previews and Members only initiatives).
  • Work collaboratively across departments to market the programs and exhibits of the Museum (Exhibitions, Public Programs, Education, Collections, Visitor Services, and Operations). Supervise volunteers and interns, as needed.
  • Design MOCA’s marketing materials for events and special events.
  • Build relations and serve as first-point of contact for MOCA’s press relations and social media; arrange press conferences and issue press announcements as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum of 2 years direct experience and successful track record in building and maintaining membership, annual giving development or direct marketing in a non-profit setting.
  • Expertise and working proficiency in Tessitura preferred.
  • Strong project management skills, with a proven ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, and keen attention to detail and deadlines.
  • Excellent supervisory, organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Strong writing, editing and communications skills.
  • Excellent team player with abilities to motivate, supervise, and work cooperatively and effectively with staff, as well as work well independently.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in InDesign, Illustrator, MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Flexibility in attending membership/development or museum events on evenings or weekends, as required.
  • Knowledge of email marketing tool preferred.
  • Experience with a museum or cultural institution preferred.
