[New York, NY] January 10, 2014 -The Museum of Chinese in America will usher in the Year of the Horse with a day-long festival, Gallop into the New Year with MOCA.


Visitors of all ages are invited to MOCA’s popular annual festival to celebrate Chinese cultural traditions and the arts, with tours, workshops, and performances on February 1. The festival will kick-off at 11:00 a.m. with an array of zodiac-themed arts and crafts activities throughout the day. Also on schedule: an awe-inspiring lion dance performance and workshop by United East Athletic Association; making rattle drums and learning paper folding; embarking on storytelling journeys with the Dim Sum Warriors; and swaying along with Chinatown's Red Silk Dancers. To usher in good tidings for the New Year, MOCA will also host an inter-generational Lunar New Year decorating bonanza at the Museum on January 25, as well as special walking tours of Chinatown to see preparations for this festive occasion. Special Program: Lunar New Year Museum Makeover

This participatory art project is a special Lunar New Year program to decorate the museum space with shimmering tassel garlands, festively themed paper cuttings, and elaborate handmade flowers. Participants will use an assortment of creative tools and materials supplied by the Museum to make the colorful creations, which will be on display in the Museum’s Cultural Programs Center through the annual Lunar New Year Family Festival.

Lunar New Year is the liveliest and one of the most important celebrations in Chinese culture and Chinatown is the place to experience it. MOCA’s walking tour takes visitors through Chinatown to learn about holiday traditions and customs observed by Chinese households. Witness how the neighborhood transforms itself in preparation to welcome the Year of the Horse and discover the characteristics that make this holiday unique.


The MOCA’s Family Festival Series is made possible from funding provided by METLIFE FOUNDATION and with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts (Museums Program), with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York Legislature.
