Digital MOCA

Digital MOCA is the national online destination for visitors to explore, connect with, and learn about the history and experience of Chinese in America.

This purely online experience will be launched in 2009 and will contain three major evolving areas:

1) History of Chinese in America

An extension of MOCA’s new permanent exhibit, History of Chinese in America will be an interactive timeline of historical records that will encompass 400+ years of Chinese American history and the impact Chinese have made on American culture, society, and economy — through politics, law, science, art, education and numerous other fields.  MOCA’s online history of the Chinese in America will promote an understanding of this rich history among a global audience.

2) Online Archives

MOCA houses more than 60,000 family letters and documents, business and organizational records, oral histories, clothing and textiles, photographs and precious artifacts. Due to the depth and breadth of these holdings, MOCA has become an important center of research for students, historians, writers, and filmmakers from all over the world. An online archives and collections will allow MOCA to easily share and build its resources with a national and international audience.

3) Online Journey Wall

The online Journey Wall will be an extension of the new art installation that will be placed near MOCA’s main entrance. Designed by Maya Lin, the wall itself will highlight and connect the journeys that families of Chinese heritage/descent have made over time. The online wall will delve further into the stories of these individuals and families, promoting a richer public understanding of the expansiveness of the Chinese American diaspora.
