“[The Leavers] uses the voices of both [a] boy and his birth mother to tell a story that unfolds in graceful, realistic fashion and defies expectations. Though it won last year’s PEN/Bellwether Award for Socially Engaged Fiction, Ko’s book is more far-reaching than that.” —The New York Times

Join us for an evening with Lisa Ko, author of 2017 National Book Award for Fiction Finalist and 2016 PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction, The Leavers. Inspired by stories of children who are in foster care or adopted because their undocumented immigrant parents have been deported or are detained indefinitely, The Leavers tells the story of Deming Guo and his mother, Polly, who goes to her job at the nail salon one morning and never comes home. Deming is eventually adopted by two white college professors in a small town upstate who change his name to Daniel Wilkinson.

Followed by booksigning.
