DRAGON BOAT FAMILY FESTIVAL!

Celebrate the spirit of dragon boating at MOCA's annual summer festival! The day’s events include: an array of themed arts & crafts, interactive storytellings, drum making workshops, and more.

 

Admission: $10 for adults, $6 for children 2 and up. Free for MOCA members.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

PERFORMANCES, WORKSHOPS, AND DEMONSTRATIONS

 

12:30pm, 2:30pm
The Sport of Dragon Boat Rowing
Discover how to dance on water (on a dragon boat) by practicing on land! Join a MOCA educator in exploring the roles of team members on a dragon boat crew, while getting energized at the same time. Bring your cameras for a special photo opportunity at the end of this activity.

 

1:00pm, 3:00pm
Drum Making Workshop

Learn the significance of drumming and drummers in a dragon boat race. Then create, embellish, and later play, your very own drum with teaching artist Evan Goodman.

 

1:30pm, 3:30pm
Dragon Boat Storytelling

Listen to a lively, musical rendition of a classic holiday tale. Travel back in time over 2,000 years as you follow Qu Yuan, an honorable poet and statesman, through his journeys, and learn how the Dragon Boat Festival came to be.

Teaching Artist Demonstrations

Paper artist Shu-Shia Sanborn will demonstrate the intricate art of paper cutting and folding as she prepares dragon boats for Family Festival attendees.

Drop-in Arts & Craft Activities


Celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival by participating in a slew of arts and crafts activity stations:

  • Create and awaken your very own accordion paper dragon.
  • Design a protective five poison lucky charm from pipe cleaner to ward off evil spirits.
  • Continue a Dragon Boat Festival tradition by stuffing a sachet (Xiang Bao) with potpourri sure to please the senses.
