Join expert calligrapher I-Hsuan Chao as she demonstrates this traditional art form by painting festive messages on traditional rice paper. You’ll learn simple brushstroke techniques, then practice writing the Chinese character for boat .

Paddles Up! with Jia Sung, 12-4pm
Design your own large-scale dragon boat paddle with painter and illustrator Jia Sung, whose work is recognized by the Society of Illustrators NY. Use pastels, collage paper, and other mixed media to create classic and original patterns.

Sticky, Savory Snacks: Zongzi Tasting, 12:30-3:30pm
Learn why zongzi—delicious, pyramid-shaped rice balls wrapped in bamboo leaves—are eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival. Then tickle your taste buds with a piece of
mouthwatering zongzi!

Potpourri, please!
Stuff your own good luck charm! Fill a festive fabric sachet (xiang bao) with fragrant dried flowers and aromatic herbs.

Egg-cellent Necklaces!

Balancing eggs perfectly upright is a fun Dragon Boat tradition. Sometimes children make special seven-string necklaces to wear their lucky eggs all day long. Make your own necklace using string, a plastic egg, and other materials, and wear it around your neck for peace and safety!

Whatever Floats Your Boat
Design a floatable mini dragon boat, then test it out in a race! Races held at the mini-pool every half hour. Will your boat float?

Let’s Go, Team!
Show your team spirit by creating a colorful team banner and a fun cheer to go along with it! Use your banner to root for your friends during the dragon boat races.

Row, Row, Row, Your Boat, 1pm & 2:30pm
Explore the roles of dragon boat team members through an interactive activity that will keep you on your feet! Bring

your cameras for a special photo opportunity.

Legends Story Time, 12:30pm & 2pm
Travel back in time over 2,000 years as you follow Qu Yuan, a fabled poet, through his journeys, and learn how the Dragon Boat Festival came to be.

Creepy Crawly Bug Hunt, 1:30pm & 3pm
Some people consider the Dragon Boat Festival (also called the Double Fifth Festival) to be one of the unluckiest days of the year. Join MOCA on a gallery hunt to drive away the five poisonous pests and protect the museum from bad luck. Be sure to bring your xiang bao—and a flyswatter!
