Dragon Boat Festival Family Day

Celebrate Dragon Boat Festival with MOCA! Find out what a poet, zongzi (sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves),and dragon boats have in common. Enjoy a day-long series of activities on the significance of this major Chinese holiday.
Performances and Workshops
12pm -1pm Performance and Storytelling with Mingmei Yip
Come learn about the significance of poetry during dragon boat festival with celebrated musician, Mingmei Yip, as she performs music inspired by the poet, Qu Yuan, using a traditional Chinese stringed instrument called the Qin. www.mingmeiyip.com

2pm – 3:30pm Meet the Author: Poetry worksh
op with Janet Wong
In honor of the Dragon Boat Festival, Janet Wong, children's book author and poet, will present her book of poems, Once Upon a Tiger: New Beginnings for Endangered Animals. Come prepared to experiment with words as Ms. Wong will also lead a poetry workshop geared for children 8 and older.

Join us on a family friendly tour and learn about some common customs and traditions of popular Chinese Festivals and Celebrations
Puzzles Exhibit Tours
11:00 am; 1:30 pm; 3:15 pm
Come on this family friendly tour of our rotating exhibit, Chinese Puzzles: Games for the Hands and Mind and try your hand with modern reproductions of classic puzzles.
* Family Friendly Tours will be limited on a first come—first serve basis. MOCA Members can sign up in advance by emailing education@mocanyc.org. The general public can sign up in-person starting at 10 am on the day of the event.
Drop in Arts and Crafts
10:00 am-4:30 pm Drop-in Arts & Craft Activities
Celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival by participating in one of our arts and crafts activity stations:
Paper Folding: Try your hand at paper folding, and make a paper dragon boat.
Fragrant Satchet (Xiang Bao): Continue this Dragon Boat Festival tradition by making a scented bag for good health.
Dragon Boat Puppets: Put on a dragon boat competition with dragon boat stick puppets.
11:00 am -3:30 pm Teaching Artists Demonstrations
Artists from the Chinese Cultural Art Association will be conducting demonstrations throughout the afternoon.
Admission: $10; Free for MOCA Members and Children aged 1 & under.
