Are your treasured textiles collecting dust in a damp basement, attic, or closest? Are creases forming in beloved baby clothes, cherished qipao, or handmade family garments? Discover how to pack, store, and handle textiles so they endure the test of time. Join textile conservator Valerie Soll as she addresses common storage problems, explains how to create a safe environment for your textiles, and demonstrates how to fold and roll every day and costume pieces.

About the Presenter

Valerie Soll has been a textile conservator at the Cathedral Church of St John the Divine in NYC since 1995, working on a wide variety of textiles. She teaches Collections Management Skills and Textile Conservation: Theory and Practice as an adjunct assistant professor in the Fashion & Textile Studies: History, Theory, Museum Practice program in the Graduate Department of the Fashion Institute of Technology. She has taught conservation dye classes and rug workshops for FIT’s advanced conservation students, as well as the textile component of a Preventive Conservation workshop for pre-program students and Conservation Issues for textile artists. Valerie Soll is a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation.

This workshop is part of MOCA's Preserving Family Heritage Workshop Series funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Led by museum and archives professionals, these workshops will teach you expert techniques for preserving your heirlooms.
