Lunar New Year Talk: Ask Tong Sing, An Introduction to the Chinese Almanac

Sat, Feb 12 from 2:30pm – 3:30pm

The Tong Sing says, "February 12 is good for starting studies and starting a business." Continue the Chinese New Year celebrations with a look at the original self-help book. Few literary artifacts encapsulate so thoroughly the essence of Chinese culture and reveal that legacy’s adaptability to changing times.

Join Joanna C. Lee and Ken Smith, co-authors of the Pocket Chinese Almanac, for an introduction to the Tong Sing, from its associations with the ancient imperial calendar to the vernacular handbook that still regulates daily life for millions of Chinese around the world.

From its rural roots in southern China to today's global Chinese community, the Tong Sing continues issuing its proclamations for each day of the upcoming year. Learn about the tradition and get a preview of what’s good (and bad) for you in the Year of the Rabbit.

Admission: $15/adult, $12/student and senior, Free for MOCA member. Each participant will receive a free copy of the Pocket Chinese Almanac (valued at $7).
RSVP required to education@mocanyc.org or 212-619-4785.
