MOCA Presents its Fifth Annual Lunar New Year Flower Market
The event, which begins celebrations in Chinatown for the Lunar New Year, brought in over 20,000 visitors to Chinatown last year. The 2008 event will feature local and regional florists and plans to feature artist demonstrations in calligraphy, knotting and paper folding, among other traditional arts. Due to popular demand, MOCA’s Flower Market 2008 will be celebrated over three days, offering one more day of Lunar New Year festivities.
An important annual tradition, flower markets typically sprout up a week before the Lunar New Year. Symbolically, flowers are perhaps the most important decorative item for the home during the holiday, making the market an exciting destination for Chinese families. The Flower Market is a cultural mainstay event for New York City and for the Chinese community of New York and has shown to contribute to the local economy and tourism by attracting thousands of visitors to the area each year.
Location: Columbus Park, Mulberry Street (between Bayard and Worth Streets)
