Fetch your friends and come on over to MOCA’s Year of the Dog Lunar New Year Family Festival!
 
Enjoy zodiac arts & crafts, lively dance performances, festive snacks, and timeless tales inspired by Chinese and Chinese American New Year’s traditions. You’re in for a pawsitively good time!
 

Tickets: $12/person, $8 for all MOCA Dual and Individual Level Members, Free for MOCA Family Level Members and above, children under 2, and Cool Culture Members.

Performances, Workshops & More

The Mane Event: A Lion Dance Performance—11:15am
No New Year’s celebration is complete without a lion dance. Kick off our annual Festival with a vibrant northern lion dance by the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company. Afterwards, sneak a peek inside the lion costume!


New Year Festival Dances—12:30pm*
Sway along with the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company as they perform traditional Chinese dances in dazzling costumes. As you watch, discover the background and inspiration behind each special folk dance. Audience participation encouraged!


Sounds of the New Year—1:30pm*
Delight in the classical sounds of the pipa 琵琶 and erhu 二胡 performed by the acclaimed musicians behind GONG MUSIC. This talented duo will play a mix of old favorites and modern twists. Learn the traditions and significance of some of the oldest instruments in the world, and discover their new meaning together!


Whirling, Twirling Ribbons: A Ribbon Dance Workshop—2:30pm & 3pm*
Watch an elegant ribbon dance by dancer and choreographer Mei-Yin Ng, then craft a simple ribbon of your own and learn how to make it twirl through the air!


Go Fetch! Gallery Hunt—12 & 3:30pm
In celebration of the Year of the Dog, follow the paw prints and sniff out the clues scattered high and low throughout the gallery!


New Year Nibbles—12-3pm
Sample sweet and savory holiday treats while you learn how each one brings flavor and fortune to the New Year.


Zodiac Face Painting—12-1pm & 2:30-3:30pm
Bring your favorite zodiac animals to life by getting a cool, colorful zodiac animal painted on your face or hand!


Legends Storytime—1 & 2pm
Itching to hear how the dog got its place in the Zodiac? Join a MOCA educator for the tale of the Great Zodiac Race. Stick around for a spooky retelling of the Legend of Nian, another New Year’s classic.

Drop-in Arts & Crafts—11am-4pm

Let’s Get Loud!
Turn ordinary household items into festive rattle drums that you can use to scare away the legendary Nian monster. Put your customized noisemakers to good use during our legends story time.


Decorative Doggies

Every year, people ring in the New Year by decorating their houses with intricate paper creations. Fold a paper dog to celebrate this year’s playful zodiac animal.


Lucky Lion Masks

Shoo away bad luck by creating your very own lion mask from cardstock, metallic foil paper, pom poms, and more. Move its eyes and mouth just like a lion dancer! To learn more about lion dancing, check out the magnificent lion heads on display in MOCA’s courtyard.
