Lunar New Year Talk: Pocket Confucius
With New Confucianism on the rise, Joanna C. Lee an
d Ken Smith (co-authors of The Pocket Confucius) take a look at Confucius’s own words and how they often depart from the dogma established in his name. Tracing the sage’s journey from a single voice in China’s Hundred Flowers Movement to dominant state ideology, the authors also focus on what the re-branding of Confucius as both moral paradigm and touristic icon means to China today.
The presentation includes visuals ranging from photographs of Confucius temples in Beijing and Qufu to clips from the 2010 film Confucius starring Chow Yun-Fat.
Admission: $10/adult; $8/student or senior (65+); free for MOCA members and children under 5. RSVP to education@mocanyc.org.
Each participant will receive a complimentary copy of The Pocket Confucius.
