Mid-Autumn Moon Family Festival

Mooncakes, lanterns, and the Jade Rabbit on the moon! Join MOCA for a fun-filled afternoon of activities celebrating the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, including: storytelling, performances, drop-in arts and crafts activities, and family friendly gallery tours.


Admission: $10 for adults, $6 for children 2 and up. Free for MOCA members.




Choose Your Own Mid-Autumn Moon Adventure
12:00pm & 2:30pm


Fly Chang E’ to the moon! Listen to retellings of a timeless myth that follows Moon Goddess, Chang E’, and skilled archer, Hou Yi, on an unforgettable voyage. Then, join teaching artist Shana Fung in crafting an alternate ending to the saga with a printmaking activity that uses styrofoam packing peanuts,

versatile veggies, and an assortment of other mixed media.


Behold the Mooncake: A Sensory Mooncake Experience
1:00pm - 1:30pm & 3:00pm - 3:30pm


What are mooncakes? When are they eaten? How did spies utilize them? Get acquainted with the making, sharing, and evolution of mooncakes. Then, use your senses to touch, smell, and finally taste sweet slices of mooncake. Enjoy GODIVA's luscious chocolate mooncakes, along with a sampling of aromatic tea, and be sure to take a mooncake recipe to try at home! All ages.


Enchanting Lanterns, a Lantern Making Workshop

1:30pm & 3:30pm

Lanterns are lit and carried during the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival to celebrate the brightness of the moon during this time of year. Using basic materials such as paper fasteners, crepe paper, and brightly colored paper, build your very own extraordinary lantern tand make this celebration even brighter! Ages 5 and up.


Teaching Artist Demonstrations
12:00pm - 4:00pm


  • Join seasoned paper artist Shu-Shia Sanborn as she demonstrates the intricate art of paper cutting and folding by preparing moon themed adornments for Family Festival attendees.
  • Come see calligrapher Tianyi Shan's demonstration of this traditional art form where she paints festive Mid-Autumn messages on textured rice paper. Visitors will also have a chance to practice their brushstrokes by fashioning the Chinese character for “moon” on a calligraphy practice pad.



Drop-in Arts & Craft Activities
12:00 pm-4:00 pm

Celebrate the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival by participating in a slew of arts and crafts activity stations:


  • Construct a Shadow Puppet                                       Make and embellish puppets of Moon Goddess, Chang E’, and legendary archer, Hou Yi. Afterwards, using the myths of festival as inspiration, put on an original shadow puppet performance in MOCA’s first debut shadow puppet theater.
  • Design Your Own Mooncake                                        Mooncakes come in an array of shapes, sizes, and patterns. Imagine and etch a bright, intricate mooncake pattern onto a colorful scratch art board.
  • Calling All Shining Stars to MOCA!                            The Mid-Autumn Festival is a magical affair where friends and family gather to gaze at the moon and admire the perfect night sky. Help transform a wall of our Cultural Programs Center into a scenic Mid-Autumn night by fashioning a twinkling wishing star to light up the night sky. Watch the scene transform throughout the day!
