Mid-Autumn Moon Festival Family Day

Mooncakes, lanterns and the Jade Rabbit in the moon! Join MOCA for a day-long series of activities in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival (中秋节), including storytellings, drop-in arts and crafts activities, gallery tours and performances.

 

Admission: $10; Free for MOCA Members and Children age 1 & under.

 

10:45AM-11:30AM Storytelling: Legends of the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival
Come and hear stories of the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival told by children’s book author and artist, Mingmei Yip. Using her book, Chinese Children’s Favorite Stories, Ms. Yip will tell stories about the Moon Goddess, the Warrior God, and the Jade rabbit who lives on the Moon. Ages 4 and up.

 

12:00PM-1:00PM Shadow Puppet Performance with Chinese Theatre Works
Come view a shadow performance led by Chinese Theatre Works (CTW) as they share a popular art tradition held during Mid-Autumn Moon Festivals when the fall moon is at its fullest and brightest – perfect for shadow puppetry. CTW will perform one of their most popular stories, Tiger Tales, which will be narrated by a wise old rabbit. All ages!

 

1:45PM -2:45PM Meet the Author: Family Workshop with Lenore Look

Alvin Ho is a second grade Chinese American boy who is afraid of everything, from girls, school, and camping to birthday parties. Acclaimed children's book author, Lenore Look, will debut her latest book, Alvin Ho: Allergic to Dead Bodies, Funerals and Other Fatal Circumstances and lead a workshop exploring how traditions bring families together. Ages 8 and up.

 

Drop in Arts and Crafts

10:00 am – 4:30 pm Drop-in Arts & Craft Activities

Celebrate the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival by participating in one of our arts and crafts activity stations:

Shadow puppets: Make puppets of Moon Goddess, Chang E, and Warrior God, Hou Yi, to put on your own shadow puppet play based on the legends of the festival.

Lantern-making: Create colorful lanterns to carry during the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival.

Mooncake-making: Design clay models of mooncakes and inscribe secret symbols.

Family Friendly Gallery Tours focused on Festivals and Celebrations

Join us on a family friendly tour and learn about some common customs and traditions of popular Chinese Festivals and Celebration as well as highlights of our core exhibit, With a Single Step: Stories in the Making of America.

Artists from the Chinese Cultural Art Association will be conducting demonstrations throughout the afternoon.
