MOCAFAMILY: Dragon Boat Family Festival

Paddle away with us! Join MOCA for an afternoon of great family fun and find out what a poet, zong zi, and dragon boats have in common.

 

Fee: $10 per person. $8 for all MOCA Dual and Individual Level Members. Free for MOCA Family Level Members and above, children under 2, and Cool Culture families.

Paper Cutting: Dragon Boats

Celebrate the spirit of dragon boating with paper artist Shu-Shia Sanborn as she demonstrates the intricate art of paper cutting by preparing paper dragon boats for Family Festival attendees.

Let’s Get Loud!**

Learn about zongzi, a traditional Chinese rice dumpling wrapped with bamboo leaves and why they are eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival. Then create, embellish, and later play your very own zongzi noisemaker with Teaching Artist Sophia Hsu. Be sure to put it to good use during legends story time!

Row, Row, Row Your Boat

Discover how to dance on water (in a dragon boat) by practicing on land! Get energized with MOCA educator Shana Fung as you explore the roles of dragon boat crew members. Bring your cameras for a special photo opportunity at the end of this activity.

 

DROP-IN ARTS AND CRAFTS

Dazzling Dragons

Design a wearable, dragon-inspired crown with sequins,
feathers, and more. Dot its eyes to awaken
the inner dragon in you!

 

Positively Potpourri

Stuff and tie a festive fabric sachet (Xiang Bao)
with dried flowers and herbs that are sure to
please the senses. Use it as a good luck charm.

 

Boisterous Bracelets

Continue a Dragon Boat tradition by braiding a
5 threaded bracelet symbolic of leading a long,
healthy life.

Legends Story Time

Listen to a lively rendition of a classic holiday tale. Travel back in time over 2,000 years as you follow Qu Yuan, an honorable poet and statesman, through his journeys, and learn how the Dragon Boat Festival came to be.

 

** This a ticketed event. Ticketed events are free with admission, but have limited capacity. Tickets will be distributed on Saturday, June 7th at the Visitor Services front desk.
