MOCAFAMILY: Mid-Autumn Moon Family Festival

Mooncakes, lanterns, & the Jade Rabbit in the moon! Join MOCA for a fun filled afternoon of activities celebrating the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, including drop-in arts and crafts, storytelling, and a mooncake tasting.

 

Fee: $10 per person. $8 for all MOCA Dual and Individual Level Members. Free for MOCA Family Level Members and above, children under 2, and Cool Culture families.

Meet and Greet with Lenore Look and Alvin Ho

1pm - 1:45pm
Join special guest Lenore Look as she reads from her new book, Alvin Ho: Allergic to the Great Wall, the Forbidden Palace, and Other Tourist Attractions. Then, with a little help from Lenore and Alvin, draw your own PDK (Personal Disaster Kit) for surviving the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival.

 

Munching on Mooncakes

2pm - 2:45pm & 3pm - 3:45pm
What are mooncakes and how are they made? Learn about the tools used to make mooncakes and the ingredients inside them. Then, use your senses to touch, smell, and taste sweet slices of traditional mooncakes from Fay Da Bakery, ice-cream mooncakes from Haagen Dazs New York Chinatown and chocolate mooncakes from Godiva Chocolatier. Be sure to take a mooncake recipe for later!

 

Mid-Autumn Moon Photo Corner

1pm - 3pm
Soak up the limelight (or moonlight!) at our Mid-Autumn Moon Festival photo corner. Strike a pose with moon goddess Chang ‘E, skilled archer Hou Yi, and special moon themed props. Don’t forget to show off your light, bright lanterns too.

TEACHING ARTIST DEMONSTRATIONS

 

Calligraphy with Tianyi Shan

12pm - 4pm
Calligrapher Tianyi Shan demonstrates this traditional art form as she paints festive Mid-Autumn messages on textured rice paper. Visitors also have a chance to practice their brushstrokes by fashioning the Chinese character for “moon” on a calligraphy practice pad.

 

Paper Folding with Shu Shia Sanborn

12pm - 4pm
Seasoned paper artist Shu-Shia Sanborn demonstrates the intricate art of paper cutting and folding by preparing moon themed adornments for Family Festival attendees.

DROP-IN ARTS AND CRAFTS

 

Light, Bright Lanterns

12pm - 4pm
Lanterns are lit and carried to celebrate the brightness of the moon during this time of year. Make the night even brighter by creating and embellishing a paper lantern of your own. Be sure to pose with your lanterns at the photo corner!

 

Mooncake Design Challenge

12pm - 4pm
Mooncakes come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and patterns. Imagine and etch a personalized mooncake pattern onto a colorful scratch art board.

 

Powerful Potions

12pm - 4pm

Join us in recreating the magical potion that began moon goddess Chang ‘E’s adventure to the moon. Layer colorful, shimmering sand in a potion bottle and add a secret wish to send to the moon. Legend has it this potion gives you the power to live forever!

Legends Story Time

Fly Chang E’ to the moon! Listen to retellings of the timeless myth of the Moon Goddess, Chang ‘E, and skilled archer, Hou Yi.

 

Round is a Moon Scavenger Hunt

12pm - 4pm
Follow clues and look high and low to spot twinkling full moons around the gallery.
