MOCA Spotlight Series continues on Friday, April 9 at 5:00 P.M. EDT. Each month, this intimate virtual conversation will highlight the timely and distinctive narrative of a Chinese American icon and friend of MOCA. Through this conversation, MOCA hopes to shed light on the distinctive yet universal American journeys of these luminaries, touching upon key moments of personal trial and stratospheric success, all within a casual, inviting, and inspiring format.
In celebration of World Health Day, MOCA Spotlight Series is honored to present as our next featured speaker, the inspiring MSNBC/NBC News Anchor and Journalist Richard Lui, and author of the new book, ENOUGH ABOUT ME: The Unexpected Power of Selflessness. Seven years ago, Richard Lui walked into his boss’ office at MSNBC / NBC News HQ , prepared to give up his dream news anchor job. Having just learned of his dad’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis, he wanted to be there for him. So Richard made the rare ask of being on TV less, and joined 53 million Americans as a family caregiver. It was in that decision that Richard discovered the unexpected power of selflessness and found the inspiration for his new book, ENOUGH ABOUT ME.
The book mixes personal stories with research and practical tips on how living selflessly can bring joy despite difficulty. It also contrasts findings from Richard’s recent reporting on some difficult subjects, from the recent rise in anti-Asian hate crimes to the Paris attacks, with behind-the-scenes stories of heroes who rose above. These heroes, in the face of tragedy and loss, selflessly show us all how small acts and choices can have major impacts.
Richard will donate all of his net proceeds to charitable organizations supporting Alzheimer’s care and research, advocacy for senior citizens, and AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islanders) representation in journalism, and World Selfless Day campaigns.
