School Partnership: MS 131

This spring, the Museum of Chinese in America’s education department continued with our partnerships with Dr. Sun Yat Sen Middle School 131 in Manhattan’s Chinatown for the afterschool program, Exploring Art, Literacy & Civic Engagement, a literacy and arts program designed to address the complex learning needs of English Language Learners that provide exposure to the arts and community resources via a deep dive into history, civics, and social justice.

During the program, students used the primary sources in MOCA’s exhibitions and MOCA’s archives and collections as “textbooks” to enhance their knowledge of US history, Chinese American history, and Chinatown; learned firsthand about the workings of the Chinatown community through guest speakers from community organizations and local businesses; conceptualized and created arts projects that reflected the students’ perspectives on their community.

The participating students invited their parents, teachers, and fellow students to the culminating showcase held at the museum on May 12, 2017.

The MOCA-MS 131 afterschool partnership is supported by the Cathay Bank Foundation.
