Dear MOCA Friends,

We hope you and your family are remaining safe and healthy during these difficult times. MOCA shares in the challenges, loss, and resilience of its community in recent months. As MOCA continues to rebuild from a devastating fire at its Collections site, MOCA stays committed to telling the untold stories of resilience, care, and community. MOCA’s moment to serve as a national anchor for Chinese American stories is now. MOCA is dedicated to the lasting legacy of inter-cultural dialogue where any individual might see their lives reflected through the remarkable stories of Chinese Americans.

We are therefore thrilled to invite you to our inaugural Spotlight Series launching on Thursday, September 17 at 4:00 EDT. Each month, this intimate and off-the-record virtual conversation will highlight the timely and distinctive narrative of a Chinese American icon and friend of MOCA. Through this conversation, MOCA hopes to shed light on the distinctive yet universally American journeys of these luminaries, touching upon key moments of personal trial and stratospheric success, all within a casual, inviting, and inspiring format.

We are honored to present our inaugural speaker as William C. Louie, one of the most acclaimed and recognizable architects worldwide, who joined Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates in 1977 and currently serves as Design Principal. In a career spanning nearly sixty years, Bill has shaped urban skylines with his bold and beautiful designs, including: the famed Infinity Tower in Sao Paulo, Brazil; the headquarters for the Chinese National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC), China Huaneng Group, in Beijing; Wheelock Tower in Shanghai; Hysan Place in Hong Kong; the Singapore Exchange Centre (SGX); the Daniel Patrick Moynihan U.S. Federal Courthouse in New York; Espirito Santo Plaza in Miami; the twin Ventura towers in Rio de Janeiro; and many others. Bill’s ascension from his humble beginnings in the back of his parents’ hand laundry in the Bronx to designing several of the world’s most iconic skyscrapers embodies the possibilities of the American dream; Bill’s journey will inspire.

We look forward to your participation, and to sharing this and many more exemplary stories of the Chinese in America.

With sincere gratitude,

Nancy Yao Maasbach, President, and the MOCA Team
