谭恩美是一位华裔美国作家，以她的处女作《喜福会》最为著名。谭1952年出生于加州奥克兰，父母是华裔移民；她是三个孩子中的老二。15岁时，她的父亲和兄弟双双死于脑瘤。这促使她的母亲Daisy举家迁往瑞士。谭开始了解她母亲在中国的生活和她的三个同母异父的姐妹。这些故事成为了《喜福会》的原型。

谭恩美的小说往往注重探索母女关系。尽管她的作品广受欢迎，但是一些评论家批评她对中国文化的描绘，以及她笔下角色的刻板形象。谭继续创作，有时候还会为摇滚乐队“Rock Bottom Remainders”伴唱，该乐队由出版作家组成，有斯蒂芬·金（Stephen King）和马特·格勒宁（Matt Groening）等著名成员。
