Join the Henry Street Settlement, Museum at Eldridge Street, Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA), and the Tenement Museum for a virtual educator evening to meet our education staff and learn how we can enhance your immigration curriculum!

For the past 400 years, Lower Manhattan has been a focal point of New York City’s history of new arrivals. It was here that communities of immigrants and migrants—German, Irish, Black, Chinese, Jewish, Puerto Rican, and more—would begin new chapters of their lives, adapt their traditions to urban American life, and transform the city and nation through the way they responded to the challenges of work, housing, and discrimination, ultimately redefining what it means to be a New Yorker and an American.

Our four museums, through their historic sites, tours, programs, and collections of personal stories, explore complementary facets of immigration and migration history, sharing and preserving this history for future generations.

As we celebrate the 400th anniversary of New York City, join us on Zoom for a special open house where you can meet museum staff and learn about the programming, trips, activities, and resources designed to support immigration units and enrich your students’ understanding of their city and their own role in New York City history.

Registration for this Zoom program is FREE. Please see the Zoom link in your order confirmation email. This program is entirely virtual. Attendees will receive .5 Continuing Teacher & Leader Education (CTLE) hours.

About the Museum at Eldridge Street:
The Museum at Eldridge Street is housed in the Eldridge Street Synagogue, a magnificent National Historic Landmark that has been meticulously restored. Opened in 1887, the synagogue is the first great house of worship built in America by Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Today, it is the only remaining marker of the great wave of Jewish migration to the Lower East Side that is open to a broad public who wishes to visit Jewish New York. Exhibits, tours, public programs, and education initiatives tell the story of Jewish immigrant life, explore architecture and historic preservation, inspire reflection on cultural continuity, and foster collaboration and exchange between people of all faiths, heritages, and interests.

About the Henry Street Settlement:
Henry Street Settlement’s mission is to open doors of opportunity for Lower East Side residents and other New Yorkers through social service, arts, and health care programs. The organization is distinguished by its commitment to listening to and learning from our neighbors—and then acting to meet the most pressing needs of our community.

Henry Street welcomes groups of all ages to our onsite history exhibition at 265 Henry Street which explores immigration at the turn of the 20th century, Progressive Era reform, and community activism. We also offer an online exhibition, history curriculum materials, and neighborhood walking tours.

About the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA):
The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) is dedicated to preserving, illuminating, and celebrating the rich history and contributions of Chinese in America. By fostering understanding and greater recognition of our experiences, MOCA endeavors to inspire and connect all Americans.

About the Tenement Museum:
The Tenement Museum welcomes you into the homes of immigrant, migrant, and refugee families to inspire connections between past and present and to promote an inclusive and expansive American society. We tell the stories of working-class tenement residents who moved to New York City from other countries and other parts of the country. Their work helped build the city and nation, and their stories help us understand our history.
