Sesame Street is a popular educational children’s program that began airing in 1969. Its title character is Big Bird (pictured above), portrayed by puppeteer Caroll Spinney. After visiting China in 1982, Spinney pitched a story idea in which Big Bird would visit China and teach American children about its culture. In June 1982 the special filmed their U.S. scenes in New York’s Chinatown; the Chinese scenes were filmed in Beijing, Guilin, and Suzhou. “Big Bird in China” aired in 1983 and won an Emmy Award in 1984 for Outstanding Children’s Program.
